From the first conversation to life after treatment
Five steps, one after another. At each one you know what comes next and why.
- Step 1 of 5.
Consultation and record review
At the first visit the doctor reviews your history, pathology and imaging, and talks through the proposed plan with you. Ask anything you like.
- Step 2 of 5.
Simulation CT and mask
A planning CT scan marks exactly where treatment will go. If needed, a mask or mould is made for you so every session starts in the same position.
- Step 3 of 5.
Treatment planning
The doctor and a medical physicist calculate the radiation dose with care, so it is focused on the target and healthy tissue is affected as little as possible.
- Step 4 of 5.
Daily sessions
A session usually takes a few minutes and is painless. Your treatment plan sets how many sessions you need.
- Step 5 of 5.

Simple answers to the first questions.
Do I need a referral for the first visit?
It can depend on your insurance and the treatment center. Ask the support team when you book; if one is needed, they will tell you.
What should I bring to the first visit?
Your pathology report, imaging reports and discs or files (CT, MRI, PET and so on), records of earlier treatments and surgery, recent tests, a list of the medicines you take, your insurance booklet and ID. If something is missing, come anyway; support can help you get it.
Is radiotherapy painful?
The treatment itself does not hurt; it feels like having an X-ray. Some side effects, such as skin redness or tiredness, can appear during treatment. The team will show you how to ease them, so tell us about any discomfort.
How long does radiotherapy take?
It depends on the type and place of the disease and the goal of treatment. Some plans are a few sessions and others a few weeks, usually on weekdays. Each session takes a few minutes, mostly spent positioning your body. Your doctor sets your plan after reviewing your case.
Will I be radioactive after radiotherapy?
With external beam radiotherapy, the most common type, no. Your body does not become radioactive and you can be close to family and children. A few special methods, such as brachytherapy or radioactive iodine, have specific instructions, which the team will explain.
Do you work with insurance?
The list of insurers will be announced soon.
These answers are general and do not replace your doctor's advice for your situation.
